Gillian loved Maksim but he didn't love her. They had been together 7 months and he was going to propose marriage to her because her upbringing and unassumingly average lifestyle as an adult made her a suitable choice as the wife of the future King of Volyarus. In addition they had a great physical relationship and she got along well with his family; but then Maksim got the results of her physical examination showing that she was unlikely to ever conceive a child, so instead of proposing that night he dumped her. Of course he slept with her first and didn't use protection because he knew she wouldn't get pregnant, except that she did. Ten weeks later Maksim found out about the pregnancy and much of the rest of the book involves his persuading her to marry him although he still acknowledges that he doesn't love her. He even philosophizes that his cold actions in dumping her is somehow no worse than her refusal to fight for him after he dumped her, because she had said that she fights for what is important to her. There was an epilogue to this book, but it seemed to be written mainly as a segue to "Prince of Secrets", the book about Demyan Zaretsky. There were also a few clues in this book about what the plot of that story and perhaps what the major secret of Prince of Secrets will be.

I liked this book. It was fast paced. I liked the characters, and their back and forth was really good. I liked the fact that the female lead had a head on her shoulders and didn't act in a way that was inmature, unrealistic or just down right stupid. I love reading romance novels...it's kind of a secret sin. I just get tired of the female leads doing things that no one in their right mind would do. So this was a nice refreshing change. I really enjoyed it!
Poor Gillian....expressing her love before the H commits himself! Somehow this puts me off a story. Though the h is a strong charactered woman she makes herself so vulnerable to the H whose priorities lie elsewhere. I don't think he deserved her at all. She accuses him of not loving her, which is ridiculous, because either you love or you don't. He is more practical than emotional which probably his position demands but doesn't say much about his feelings for her. His realization of his love for her seems almost a convenience for all around. If it wasn't for the baby(he is already dating other women!), I doubt he would have gone back to her. A rather disappointing read.
After he finds out that she couldn't get pregnant he breaks up with her. But before he leaves he beds her one more time. She is devastated when she finds out that she is pregnant. His spies inform him that he is to be a father. Now he rushes to marry her. But she is fighting not too. Who will win?
Reading this book was like reading the great debate. Every page was why did you break up with me, why didn't you fight for me, I cannot trust you, and why is love enough or why isn't it enough. I have had enough with all the lines and lines of discussion between H and h. Like back and forth for pages. The book isn't long enough for all that.
Disclaimer - I know buying Harlequin is submitting that the plot will be simple and easy...I actually look forward to that sometimes. I just thought this was overly boooring and a huge drag.
I actually really liked this. It has a few issues like the fact that the hero really denies that he can love anyone but then at the end says "of course I love you". He never said it before but then the reader can see it even if the hero cannot. He literally asks the heroine "what did she think he was always calling her for during his meetings and checking on her if not because he loved her?". LOL, he still denied the word love until she got to his country and when she does, he just grabs her up and I love the protectiveness. He acts like they were apart for months instead of 4 days, it was cute. I like his mom too and feel she did not deserve what the hero's father did to her!!!
I love Lucy's work and I enjoyed this one but....I feel like the women who get tossed aside so easily by the guys in these books go back to fast. I sit there ready for just one of them to have a spine. I keep praying they will make the guy a little work harder to make up for being so heartless but its like " Let me lay down again so i'll be ready for you to walk on me ". Its not just this book. Its most books in the Harlequin venue. Don't get me wrong I really like these books but give these women a little more backbone please!!!!!
Gillian Harris has been expecting Prince Maks Yurkovich to pop the question, especially since he asked her to have her annual exam performed by his doctor. Gillian is in love and will marry him in spite of his royal heritage. But she hadn't had time to read the medical report, indicating she has a fertility issue, before Maks arrives, so they spend the evening talking at cross purposes and when she invites him to stay the night he cannot resist one last time together.
When Gillian realizes that Maks has come to break things off, she is devastated and orders him to leave. 10 weeks later Maks finds out that she is pregnant with his child and comes back to insist that they marry.
First of all this is a Harlequin so it's a sensual story rather than erotic.
I like Lucy Monroe and I like her writing style. Good, fast read.
