Crime Brulee Culinary Food Writer Nancy Fairbanks Books Reviews

I bought this book at a book sale for $.75. I am so glad I did not buy it on my kindle for anymore than that. Like other reviewers I agree this book is a chore to get through. I haven't even finished it yet. It doesn't usually take me this long to get through a book like this but goodness, it is not one of those books I couldn't put down. I did enjoy the recipes and the restaurants mentioned in the book. I will finish the book since I've made it through over half the book. I don't know if I'd read another book in this series.
Carolyn Blue now has an empty nest. Her husband, a chemistry professor in El Paso, is going to a conference in New Orleans. Carolyn who just landed a contract to write about food figures New Orleans is the perfect place to start. She and her husband begin by giving a dinner for their friends on their first night. However, Julienne (Carolyn's best friend) and Nils quarrel and Julienne disappears.

The rest of the book is how Carolyn tries to find her friend but no one else takes Julienne's disappearance seriously. Not even Nils (Julienne's husband). Carolyn learns that she can't report a missing person to the police only the husband can and not for 48 hours. Thus begins the adventure. Carolyn gets mugged several times, eats lots of wonderful food, makes daily trips to the police station making the aquaintance of a very handsome officer. But no one takes her seriously because no one sees the muggings and the police think she's faking for attention.

The receipes throughout make your mouth water. The atmosphere of New Orleans makes me want to visit. However, I guessed the murder about half way thorough the book. Enjoy the background and characters and the descriptions of food. The mystery is a bit light but it's still a fun read.

I have read another story of this culinary crime genre, and, sad to say, the other one was better, both in crime and food.
This is the story of a new food critic writer, Carolyn, on her first trip to New Orleans. Her husband is a chemistry professor attending a convention there, and she tags along. Her friends from college (one also from her youth), will be there, so they are having a reunion. Oops, one is having marital difficulties, and that is so embarrassing. The wife, her childhood friend, Julienne, leaves in a huff and never returns, or appears again. The husband, other friends, etc., do not worry as much as the heroine does. She worries because her friend would call to say what is going on, or would show up to do her part in the convention or would do something to show that she is all right, but there is nothing from her friend no phone call, no appearance, no contact with her husband, nothing. Going to the police does not help, Carolyn is not a relative nor has Julienne been missing for any great amount of time and her husband just thinks she has gone off with a boyfriend. Carolyn just knows this all is not right, but can not do much about it, and so the story takes off.
The premise is really odd, though somewhat believable, it is throughly off base, even a bit trite. The situations Carolyn gets into are somewhat amusing, but you get the feeling that it is all put on, or frosting, to fill the story out. The recipes look good, but somehow seemed a bit of an addition or afterthought. We tried the Pecan Crusted Catfish, though a different recipe from a healthy newsletter, not the one in the book (it just happened to be in this newsletter my wife picked up, and all I could say was, "hmmm, hmmmm. Wow! Hmmmm." My wife can cook, you know.
It was funny how Carolyn had to keep reminding herself that she did not cook anymore, just ate other's cooking. Having some relatives from down there, I was interested in the history of the people of the area Ms. Fairbanks put in there. That was really good and showed she was did some homework.
It had a few interesting recipes and told you of alot of places to visit while you are in Orleans. It keeps you guessing who done it.
carolyn blue starts her adventures in this book in new orleans and it was a joy 2 read both carolyn's point of view, but also that of her husband jasopn
I had forgotten how much fun this series was. I had read most of hers and then got away from them. Well worth reading.
