I often find regencies featuring American heroines a struggle to read, which tends to get in the way of enjoyment. Generally, I find they are usually written in such a way that they come across as brash, outspoken and somehow lacking when I suppose the author's trying to portray them as independent, forward thinking young women, But they just don't 'click' as regency heroines with me, so I invariably abandon the story and move on to another.I am happy to say that the h in this story was not some in your face, loud American but a charming, well mannered young American lady (with the emphasis on the word 'lady'). I really liked her, and I enjoyed her courage in stepping outside the bounds of propriety when she first meets the H, then truly admired her when they were both unmasked to each other when they encountered each other in society.
While I do sometimes find the trope of marriages formed for financial or purely dynastic reasons somewhat tiresome, for those traditions had largely passed by the regency, the H's looming betrothal to another provided a credible source of external conflict to the romance between the h and H, and a nice turning point when those arrangements were blown out of the water by unfolding events.
It's not a keeper, but it was an enjoyable read nonetheless.

When a Lord Needs a Lady Lords and Ladies Series Book 3 edition by Jane Goodger Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This book was very enjoyable to read. It was lighthearted but at the same time full of emotion. The characters were very likable. Don’t pass this one up.
This is a very sweet and romantic novel written by Jane Goodger. Initially it is very surprising how soon the H and h fall in love but as Ms. Goodger adds in more layers of angst and heartbreak, the story develops more character. A very delightful read.
The story line was different and entertaining. I liked both characters. Graham who try's to do the right thing and take care of his people regardless of his own happiness and Katherine, who is funny and sweet. I like Jane Goodger and this is a continuation from the Mad Lords Daughter, so I recommend you read that book first.
Why write a book about a 19 year old who falls in love with a 38 year old. It is sick. Waste of time and money
This novel is just the right read for a happy diversion. It has the love and the misery that goes along with it. There are times we can't see the possible way it can end happily but as in all Romance novels we have hope. Jane Goodger knows how to keep us guessing and it's hard to put the book down until we see how the heck things can turn out right.
Katherine and Graham make a beautiful match even though they don't know it. It's worth the read to see why.
Exactly what you'd expect from Jane Goodger! She has become one of my favorite authors, ànd I am VERY picky. I recommend you spend time with the Miserable Marquess and the lady who made him smile. You'll enjoy the journey .
I really loved reading this book right to the end. I couldn't put it down! But..... It made me a little sad. These two really loved each other right from the start but with so many misunderstandings between them I wish they had just talked and it would have been all resolved sooner. The passion was between these two right from the start and made this book a real page turner. I especially loved their verbal sparring and their spontaneous laughter. Very enjoyable, can't wait for more from this author.
